Reporting Abuse

Our terms page describes our abuse policy. Most often, we respond to abuse by swiftly blocking access to the site in question. Generally, we require abuse reports to be submitted by the site owner or webmaster, except in cases of harrassment by web-mail or web-messaging.

In cases of serious abuse, we may turn over the perpetrator's IP to the appropriate authorities. When we are not legally obligated to turn over the information, we reserve the right to exercise our judgement whether to turn over the IP, depending on the nature of the abuse and the nature of the authorities requesting the information.

If all you want is a site block, just fill in the site block request form. If this doesn't work, send email to abuse@the-cloak.com telling us the site you wish to block, and whether you want us to block all access or just POST access. Please be sure to email us from an address that clearly belongs to the site owner (like webmaster@mysite.com). For a simple site block we require only the site name, and don't need any of the additional information described below.

An abuse report that includes a request to save off the IP of the offender can be submitted using our abuse report form. It should include the following information:

  • The EXACT TIME of the abuse. For example, the complete current time is Fri, 12 Mar 2010 14:35:49 GMT. We require the timezone, and it is best if you express the time as a 24 hour GMT time, or at least tell us how many hours ahead or behind GMT the abuse time is.

HINT: if for example you are 5 hours 30 minutes behind GMT, your server logs will often express the time as 17/Feb/2002:11:32:18 -0530

  • The EXACT PAGE to which the abuse was posted - for example http://www.mysite.com/bboard/post?x=123

  • The NATURE OF THE ABUSE.

  • If you wish us to save off the abuser's IP address, we also request an indication that you have contacted or intend to contact the appropriate law enforcement authorities to obtain a warrant or court order requesting the IP. We will then use the information that you have provided us to save off the relevant log entries so they are not lost.

The best way to submit an abuse report is with our abuse report form. Using this form ensures that we get the correct information to preserve the relevant log entries as quickly as possibly.

If this form does not work, you may also submit an abuse report by sending an email to abuse@the-cloak.com
